Evan Balfour started CrossFit back in late 2006 to begin getting himself physically prepared for a career in firefighting. He had been a soccer player since he was a kid, so the concept of weightlifting was new to him. He began by following CrossFit’s main website, CrossFit.com, and performing the workouts in his old high school’s gym. Evan quickly became addicted to CrossFit and grew to love the weightlifting movements it emphasized.
In 2009, he suffered a back injury that required surgery and put CrossFit, and his career, on pause. He recovered using other forms of the exercise suggested by his physical therapist, but only after few months of firefighting, he was back at the doctor’s office. This ultimately led to the end of his career as a firefighter; little did he know it was the beginning of his career as a CrossFit coach…
After his final year as a firefighter in 2011, Evan dedicated himself to fully recovering from his injury using CrossFit as his training plan. He started back using just the barbell for most of his workouts and focused on gymnastics skills and body awareness in his garage at home for about a year. It was also during this that he decided to obtain his CrossFit Level 1 certification.
In the fall of 2014, Evan married his best friend Grace and left his position as a coach in Austin to follow her here to San Antonio for her work. He bounced around from gym to gym, never finding one in which he could really "sink in.” After researching 925 and talking to Ben, he decided to apply for a coaching position. Meeting everyone from the gym instantly gave him that "homey" feeling that he had been hoping to find.
Evan says CrossFit has made him who he is today - no if, ands, or buts about it. He would not be where he is today if he had not dedicated himself to healing properly and strengthening his body through CrossFit.
